About: The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) was the first humane society that was established in North America and is also currently the largest. The ASPCA is set out to ensure that all animals in the hands of humans are being treated in a responsible and sustainable manner.
The ASPCA also plays a large part on the enforcement end of animal cruelty laws all over the country. On the other end of the spectrum, the ASPCA also focuses on curbing animal homelessness by providing appropriate resources like shelters and medical care. Atlthough the ASPCA is primarily located in New York City they have offices all over country giving them a national presence.
3 Big Activities
Animal Rescue- The ASPCA has rescued or assisted in the rescue of over 12,00 animals in 2015 alone. Almost 80% of those animals were rescued from observed harm or danger. The ASPCA sees the most rescue efforts take place from dog fighting operations, puppy mills, and hoarding operations.
Animal Protection- The ASPCA useo all aspects of the law ranging from federal to state, to protect animals. They focus on the prevention of harm and unfortunately they take action when harm is present in animals. In 2015 over 120,000 ASPCA advocates took action in the war against animal cruelty.
Animal Placement- To combat animal homelessness the ASPCA has adoption centers and shelters all over the country. They also have animal hospitals in high traffic locations like New York City and other major cities. The animal placement practices put on by the ASPCA were responsible for 4600 adoptions in 2015, and over 7500 animal relocations total.
Ways to Help
The ASPCA is always looking for new homes for animals as shelters can become overcrowded which is stressful on the animals. Consider opening up your home to animals through adoption. Or if you aren’t suited for adoption, consider donating to the ASPCA via their website or volunteering your time.
